As a true love story of Radha-Krishna held in Mathura, devotees performed Rasila to commemorate his love for Radha. They also perform some scenes from their story and recreate them. An idol of an infant, Krishna, is bathed, and they place that in a cradle because Krishna was born at midnight. 

This event is celebrated joyfully throughout Maharashtra, with people re-enacting Krishna’s childish attempts to steal butter and curd from earthen pots. This ritual is known as the Dahi Handi celebration. 



It involves individuals forming a human chain or pyramid to reach and eventually destroy a Matka or pot suspended high above the ground.

The birth of Lord Krishna was on the ninth day of the dark fortnight. He was the real son of Devaki and Vasudeva. At that time, Mathura was ruled by Krishna’s uncle, King Kansa. The uncle killed his sister’s children since a prophecy said that the couple’s eight sons would be the reason for Kansa’s demise. Then the birth of Lord Krishna held who became the downfall of the Kansa. 



Several legends tell the life of Krishna, and he is a prominent figure in Hindu literature. Many people of Mathura love Krishna’s pranks of stealing butter, dancing joyously in his life, and holding a pitcher or ball of butter in his hands.

He is often represented as a lover and dancer, often playing the flute and surrounded by loving women. According to legend, he tamed the multi-headed serpent Kaliya by dancing it into submission.
